r Greater i\ Baltimore
Making Giant Strides
MILLIONS BEING SPENT IN IMPROVEMENTS
$10,000,000 Sewerage System under way. Big' New DocKs approaching' completion.
Magnificent ParK System, connected by Broad Boulevards in process of
development.
'Widening of streets to afford g'reater wharfage and traffic facilities beg'un. Twenty New Public Libraries to be erected. Many other vast projects planned.
These are only a few pointers that are addressed to investors, manufacturers (Si homeseeKers for their consideration.
HE progress of Baltimore during the past year in every depart- ment— Municipal, Industrial and Commercial — has been so great that the most sanguine expectations of its citizens have been exceeded. An imposing array of figures might be cited in sup- port of this, but no adequate conception could even then be obtained without a close analysis.
We shall enumerate only a few conspicuous facts, which indicate the great and rapid growth that is on, and why Greater Baltimore offers to the Manufacturer, Investor, and Homeseeker advantages not pos- sessed by other cities.
Commercial and
Industrial Advantages.
Compactly put they are these :
Metropolis of the South.
Abundant manufacturing sites.
Facilities and terminals of a great port.
Accessibility to coal and iron fields and raw materials of various kinds.
Proximity to sources of the most diversified food supply at lower cost than in any other large city in the United States.
Advantageous distributive center, especially for the South and West.
Warehouse and factory rentals lower than in other principal cities.
Cheapest market in which merchants of the South and near West may replenish their stocks.
Greatest corn port in the world.
Conservative financial methods.
Moderate real estate values.
Thrifty and intelligent population.
Ample supply of efficient labor.
Moderately priced homes.
Plenty of schools, libraries, churches, and all the other elements that go to make it a delightful place of residence.
The commercial organizations aim to make Greater Baltimore the most attractive city in the United States.
A Peep Into the Future.
Rich in all these possessions, one may conjure up what a glorious future is in store for Baltimore, when one considers that it is 150 miles nearer Chicago than New York is; 210 miles nearer to St. Louis, and 240 miles closer to Pittsburg.
Into the far South and West, Baltimore is now sending its products, and those it obtains from the South to distribute. Its straw hat factories turn out more hats than all the other factories of the country. Its cotton duck mills supply over half of all this material used on land and sea. Its tin can factories turn out more cans than all the rest of the country, and its packing and canned goods factories are the largest in America. It produces nearly two-thirds of all the overalls and working men's jackets sold in this country, and the manufacturing of men's
12
shirts has taken gigantic proportions. It leads in the manufacture of clothing. As the greatest market in the world for corn, Baltimore is favorably known from Sweden to Spain, and from Germany to Ireland, for absolute reliability of grade and uniformity of quality. The growth of this corn export trade has induced many enterprising men to engage in it.
Invitation to AIL
Enterprising Investors and Manufacturers seeking an outlet for their capital are asked to consider also these facts :
Baltimore is 175 miles nearer the central Western States than any of the Northern Atlantic ports, and centrally located with respect to the immense coastwise traffic that is carried up and down the Atlantic- It has more coastwise vessels than New York and Philadelphia combined, and by means of two trunk line systems running East and West, with a third in process of completion, and three extending North and South, reaches every section of the United States that can by any stretch be termed tributary to the city.
A Real Home City.
There are no tenements in Baltimore, a fact which has tended greatly to make the workingman contented. Vast building operations, consisting of beautiful two-story and three-story houses, are now being pushed far out into the Annex. In this district alone the city proposes to spend $500,000 for improvements. The car facilities are ample, en- abling the worker, banker, or whoever he may be, to reach the center of the city in far shorter time than is the case in other principal cities. A new trolley road between Baltimore and Washington, which is expected to be in operation by July 1, 1907, will open up a great region that will be studded with homes.
Municipal Enterprise.
Rising phcenix-like from the ashes of the great conflagration, the city is spending $50,000,000 towards establishing the Greater Baltimore. The $10,000,000 sewerage system is in process of construction : the great new docks are approaching completion ; and the development of the Annex, and a magnificent system of parks, connected by boulevards, has been begun. During the past year the Fire Department was en- larged and an increased water supply for the city provided. In this year the municipality expects to spend $17,000,000 in advancing the improvements under way and in starting other authorized projects. A gift from Mr. Carnegie of $500,000 has made possible the erection of 20 new branches to the Enoch Pratt Library, which added to the other libraries already established, will give Baltimore a great library system.
Baltimore's Population.
An estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily en- joined upon the Directory Publisher. The figures which we herewith tender are arrived at from careful calculation and can be considered practically accurate.
689,187.
INCREASE OVER 1906, 4,167.
These figures represent all persons living or doing business within the city limits who go to make up the population of Greater Baltimore, and also include all people living in the adjacent suburbs.
A Directory Is for vService.
No person can get the best results from a good Directory except through an understanding of its resources and how to utilize them. To learn the scope of information given in this Directory consult the Index to Contents on pages 14 to 16.
To the great Baltimore public we wish to extend our thanks for its hearty co-operation with us in our efforts to publish a City Directory which shall be in keeping with New and Greater Baltimore.
R. L. POLK (Si CO., of Baltimore,
Publishers.
Think It Over.
We also wish to call attention to the wide circulation which our Baltimore City Directory has. In practically every city in the United States of 50,000 inhabitants and over, our City Directory will be placed on file for the use of all the people in that city, and in addition to this the publishers have this year made arrangements to place a copy of the 1907 Baltimore City Directory into practically all towns in the entire South, absolutely free of charge, covering every State from the Atlantic Coast west to the Mississippi River, and from Maryland south to the ( »ulf of Mexico.
We feel assured that the placing of this index to our city into the midst of the great South cannot but be of great advantage in bringing Baltimore closer to the South, and in making the ties which bind them together another link stronger.
We shall endeavor from year to year to continue to place our Citv Directory throughout the South, and in every way possible to educate the Southern people to the knowledge that these Directories are placed there for their use, in order to get them closer and better acquainted with our city, which is the natural distributing point for that entire section.
The people of these towns are prone to judge our city by our City Directory, hence our endeavor to make it the best City Directorv in .tin- United States, and one that will be a credit to Baltimore.
R. L. POLK (SI CO., of Baltimore,
Publishers.

R. L. POLK & CO.'S
Baltimore City
Street Directory.
Revised and Corrected Up to March 1st, 1907.
By the decimal system of numbering houses one hundred numbers are allotted to each square, commencing at CHARLES STREET running EAST and WEST and at BALTIMORE STREET running NORTH and SOUTH. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accordance with tnls system. By this system Even Numbers are invariably found on the North and West side of Streets, and Odd Numbers on the South and East side. The follow- ing classification and arrangement of Streets forms a diagram for each Street, giving its starting noint. intersections and numbers, and will be found of great utility in finding special locations. From this list the location of any number on a Street can be ascertained; as, for instance, wishing to know at what part of Dolphin Street No. 317 comes, look at Dolphin Street and you will find that Linden Avenue runs from 303 and Eutaw Place 329, showing that No. 317 Dolphin Street is between Linden Avenue and Eutaw Place.
ABBREVIATIONS. — After the name of a Street, the word street Is omitted; Al — alley, Av — avenue. Bldp — building, Ct— court, E — east, La — lane, N — north, PI — place, Rd — road. S — south, Sp — space, Sq — square, Ter — terrace, W — west Whf — wharf.
